8 IDEAS FOR A SAFE CELEBRATION IN SANTA BARBARA
Here’s some hoppy news: Easter 2021 is right around the corner: April 4th. Even in the age of COVID-19, Easter is a special time for Santa Barbara residents because, in addition to its traditional meaning, it also means the spring season is upon us. Spring is one of the best times to live on the American Rivera. Temperatures are mild, with highs in the upper 60s, and the area celebrates plenty of sun, with outdoor adventures galore.
With vaccines rolling out, you might feel a bit safer and more prepared to celebrate vs. last year, but experts warn to still exercise caution and follow all guidelines. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun; especially if you live in Santa Barbara or Montecito. Here’s a list of safe Easter 2021 activities:
- Easter Brunch
Nearly four out of five adults celebrate Easter, and due to COVID-19, many will take their celebration home. To help make sure the day is still special, many local restaurants are offering delicious take-out meals. If you do want to enjoy a traditional Easter Brunch at one of your favorite local restaurants, there are several to choose from that will be open with special COVID-19 precautions.
- Decorate Eggs
Decorating eggs is a classic Easter tradition. But this year, think about printing out eggs that kids can use crayons and markers to decorate. You can draw on flat paper, order pre-decorated ones that you can hang, or make 3-D eggs out of paper.
- Virtual Family Gathering
Even if we can’t get together with our family and friends this year, we can still see them. It’s pretty easy to set up a group video call on Zoom, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, Skype or Google Hangouts. When you have everyone there, the group can play a fun Easter-themed game like Bingo with printable sheets. You can also have everyone dress up in their favorite Easter outfits (bonus points for cute bunny ears!) and vote on the winner.
- Easter Sunday at Old Mission Santa Barbara
If your tradition for Easter includes attending a service at the Old Mission in Santa Barbara, I have some good news. The Resurrection of the Lord will take place outdoors in front of the chapel at 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. Put on your mask and head to the parking area in front of the Mission chapel where the service will take place. Bring a chair, and a hat or umbrella for shade. Face masks are required at all times, except while receiving Communion. A social distance of 6-feet apart will be required for all who are not of the same household. Please maintain that distance from other parishioners, friars and volunteers before, during and after Mass.
The 9:00 a.m. mass will also be live-streamed. Anyone can view it on the Mission’s YouTube Channel.
- Other Livestream Virtual Easter 2021 Church Services
While Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara usually hosts an Easter service at the Sunken Gardens with thousands of people, this year the service will be broadcast on KEYT. The service will be available on Facebook, YouTube, CalvarySB.com, and KEYT at 10 a.m.
“I’m sad to not be able to see people in person this Easter, but I’m really excited for the way we’re going to be able to reach people at home this year,” said Pastor Tommy Schneider. “The message of Easter is exactly what we need in a time like this.”
- Give Easter Meals
The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission invites everyone to practice gratitude this Easter by giving back to those in need. Each $2.21 meal you give will help feed someone who had nowhere else to turn. Santa Barbara Rescue Mission exists because of the generosity and support received by the Rescue Mission from the community.
- Easter Kayaking at the Channel Islands
The Santa Barbara Adventure Company invites you to explore California’s sea caves on Easter Sunday. This day trip to Santa Cruz Island in the beautiful Channel Islands National Park departs out of Ventura Harbor. Enjoy dolphin and marine life on the cruise to the island. Once there, groups will explore the cave in kayaks and have the opportunity to snorkel or hike. Call 805-884-9283 for details and reservations.
- Santa Barbara Wine Country Tours
Perhaps you’d like to pedal into the heart of the Santa Barbara wine country on Easter Sunday and explore the Foxen Canyon Trail or Santa Rita Hills. The close proximity of several notable vinyards, all within short pedaling distance, makes this day’s ride very enjoyable. Don’t feel like biking? Santa Barbara Wine Country Tours have other wine tours to choose from. If you like tasty treats and wine, then you are going to love their Cupcake and Wine Tour.
