SUMMER IS ENDING, BUT THE FUN CONTINUES ON THE AMERICAN RIVERIA
September is nearly upon us and, like any September on the American Riviera, there are tons of Santa Barbara events to plan for. Although summer may be coming to a close, don’t put your festival attire away just yet. The month will offer just as much fun as peak summer months, with fewer crowds to shuffle through.
Following is a collection of noteworthy September happenings you won’t want to miss.
SANTA BARBARA EVENTS
- 3rd Annual California Brew & BBQ Fest
This is your chance to taste samples from more than 50 breweries, cideries, and wineries. The tasty event will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019, at one of the most beautiful oceanfront venues Santa Barbara has to offer: Chase Palm Park. Enjoy tri-tip from top Santa Barbara restaurants — and beer!! After all, this is one of the largest beachfront beer festivals in the state. Make your vote count as local chefs compete for “Best Tri-Tip in the 805.” As the cool ocean breeze wafts the sweet tang of barbeque, grab your souvenir glass and start sipping, just a frisbee throw away from the sparkling Pacific, while listening to One2Tree. The soulful reggae band keeps the beat going for this all-day feast.
- Balloon & Wine Festival 2019
Don’t miss the inaugural Balloon & Wine Festival at Elings Park. Taking place on Saturday, September 14. From 6 PM – 9 PM, this will be an unforgettable evening where participants can sip the night away as the sunset illuminates hot-air balloons in the sky. Before or after you take your turn soaring into the sky, you and your friends, both old and new, can enjoy the picturesque oak groves, large-scale light sculptures and the finest world-class wineries of California’s Central Coast.
- SB Acoustic
If you like acoustic music, don’t miss this fabulous series. Opening Weekend is September 14 and 15 with concerts continuing through December 14. This is your chance to enjoy international acoustic concerts highlighting some of the world’s greatest guitarists. Featuring classical, modern, blues, Americana, gypsy jazz, flamenco, folk, and more, the concerts will be held at various theaters in Downtown Santa Barbara. A total of 22 concerts will entertain and inspire while six guitar workshops will be held, where you can hone in on your own talents.
- Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival
All that glitters is not gold. Some shiny objects may be lustrous sea glass instead. On the weekend of September 14 and 15, explore the Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival. You’ll find unique handmade crafts, jewelry fashioned from sea glass, ocean-themed art and more. The only one of its kind in Southern California, the festival will be celebrating its sixth year at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in 2019 and is expected to attract thousands of sea glass lovers and art enthusiasts. Before heading to the festival, soak up the inspiration behind many of the pieces with a stroll along Santa Barbara’s breathtaking coastline.
- Flamenco Arts Festival
This event is your passport to the world of Flamenco. Returning from September 26 through 29, this favorite of Santa Barbara events offers four rhythmic days featuring world-class artists from Spain. They’ll take up residence in Santa Barbara to perform, teach and lecture about the fantastical world of Flamenco. Held at the Lobero Theatre, the event will provide a series of live concerts, lectures, film, workshops, and celebrations. Can’t miss events include the Santa Barbara debut of the Andres Vadin Project(September 26) and the premiere of FARO at the Flamenco Arts Festival Red Carpet Gala (September 28).
- Armchair Travels – National Geographic’s Old and New in Persia
Join the conversation on September 29 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. It will focus on the September 1939 issue of National Geographic magazine. The issue features a 20-page article by the Baroness Ravensdale, including 13 color photographs by Stephen Nyman. For many Americans, this was their first exposure to Persia and its cultural heritage. Get answers to the questions “What was the goal of this issue?” “Who were these adventurers and photographers, and why did they go to Persia?” “What was travel like at the time?” and “How do the tourist itineraries of the past compare to those today?”
- 83rd Annual Solvang Danish Days
Velkommen til Solvang! Don your traditional Danish garb and get ready to dig into mouth-watering treats (Æbleskiver anyone?) and hearty Viking-size sausages at the 83rd Annual Solvang Danish Days. Spanning the weekend of September 20–22, the entire town of Solvang will celebrate the history of Denmark in true Danish fashion. Enjoy parades, folklore, music, and fun for the whole family. Stroll on over to the Viking Beer & Wine Garden to imbibe with friends, or have your future read by a genuine rune stone interpreter. New to the festival this year is a guided Solvang Food & Photo tour, and an ax-throwing area. (Yes, you read that correctly.) Last, but certainly not least, don’t forget to take in the rich history the little town has to offer while you’re there.
- 28th Annual Goleta Lemon Festival
Enjoy the sunshine with a mouthful of lemon-filled flavors at the Goleta Lemon Festival. This festival, featuring – you guessed it — lemon-flavored treats, takes place for two full days of fun on September 28-29. The entire family will enjoy exploring the finest arts and crafts vendors, lemon-inspired treats, a classic car show, and amusement park rides. These are just a few of the many activities planned to pay tribute to the iconic Goleta lemon, which became popular in Goleta Valley in the 1890s when lemon orchards began to flourish in the area. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a piece of lemon pie, or for those 21+, sip lemon inspired craft beer.
