HERE ARE THE THINGS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN’T THOUGHT OF
Those of us fortunate enough to live in Montecito love throwing a lawn party, especially this time of year. Who doesn’t welcome the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends on a warm summer night; feeling the cool ocean breeze while witnessing a breathtaking sunset? Most of us who live here have amazing backyards, perfect for socializing. We also have everything we need to throw a party of any size and make it a spectacular one. So, here is a list of 7 necessities you might not have but you really need to have on hand this year.
- SINGLE-SERVE SIDES
Instead of setting an uncovered bowl of your famous potato salad on your table and letting the flies get it, why not use single serve side dishes? Just tally up the number of guests you’re hosting and divvy up the dish into single-serve lidded jars. That will keep bugs out in a fashionable way.
- HAND WIPES
Having these at your lawn party is especially helpful if the event includes children, or if you’re throwing the big summer barbeque bash. Barbeque or not, no matter what you serve, messes happen. A gracious host or hostess will have some hand wipes available to guests. Just place a canister or box of environmentally-friendly wipes on each table around your yard. That way, your guests can instantly wipe clean any dirty hands without leaving the fun or that sticky residue.
I’m sure you’ve heard that sage can be used to ward off bad energy, but did you know it is also great for getting rid of bugs? If you have sage in your backyard, just snip some from your garden, tie it in a bundle and put it on the warm grill post-burgers. If you don’t have any in your backyard, you can order Santa Barbara sage from Sooner Plant Farm. The sacred scent will waft through your yard and keep insects from invading the party.
- SPRAY STATIONS
Speaking of bugs, it’s always a good idea to have a bug backup. Here’s a novel idea. Set up a small table with repellant spray and lotion. Make sure it’s well away from the food. Even better, set it up near yard games so the kids can have easy access.
- RECYCLING BASKET
Besides a trashcan, have a recycling basket in your backyard, too. Instead of having guests toss everything into one big trash bag, put out a metal basket and label it “Recycling.” It’s a nice easy touch for you, your guests, and the environment.
- BROWN CRAFT PAPER
I love this idea. Get some plain brown craft paper and spread it over all outdoor tables. This not only looks fantastic, but it also makes cleanup a breeze. Place several jars and bottles filled with flowers, utensils, and napkins on top to hold the paper in place. Then at the end of the night, just fold it up and toss away the mess. Voila! (You might even want to add containers of crayons or markers, so kids of all ages have a chance to express their inner artist.)
- FLAMELESS CANDLES
These battery-powered candles are a lovely and safe way to transition from day to evening. Plus, everyone looks good in candlelight. Your yard will sparkle when you place them in holders or paper lanterns. Guests will think your backyard came right out of a design magazine. Plus, you won’t have to worry about real flames attracting bugs, getting knocked over or being blown out by the breeze.
