Vintage After Vintage, Foxen Pinot Noir Receives High Acclaim and Awards
September is California Wine Month, the perfect reason to head to Foxen Vineyards in Santa Barbara Wine Country’s Santa Maria Valley to experience Foxen Pinot Noir. All month long, cities and communities throughout California are inviting locals and visitors alike to enjoy special tastings, festivals, concerts, wine, and food offerings. That makes this month the time to experience the annual harvest season first hand and celebrate all that California’s vintners and growers bring to our lifestyle, economy and culinary pleasures.
A Cornucopia of Wineries and Wines
The State of California produces 85% of the wine made in the United States. California has 138 American Viticultural Areas spread over more than 800 miles. That means you need an entire month to capture the sheer scale and diversity of the California wine scene. Included in that wine scene is the Santa Barbara Wine Country, known as one of the world’s most stunningly beautiful wine regions, with more than 100 unique wineries and tasting rooms. Discover the urban wineries of Santa Barbara, Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, and Lompoc and the rural vineyards of the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez Valleys. Enjoy an incredible array of wines there, including my favorite: Foxen Pinot Noir, plus Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and nearly 50 other unique varieties.
“”September is an especially magical time for wine lovers in California,” says Gladys Horiuchi, a spokesperson for the Wine Institute. “It’s the harvest,” she explains. “The grapes are fully mature on the vine and some are already coming in. The smell of crushed grapes is in the air and if you get out early, you might even see the crush taking place. This is an exciting time to visit.”
Raise a Glass at Foxen Winery & Vineyard
Foxen Winery & Vineyard was opened in 1985 at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Northern Santa Barbara County by Bill Wathen and Dick Dore. Dedicated to creating small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines, the “Foxen Boys” use a straightforward and minimalist approach to winemaking.
The winery has a rich history. The name itself comes from Dick’s great-great-grandfather, William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800’s. He purchased nearly 9000 acres of the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in 1837. The area is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen’s distinctive anchor used for his ranch cattle brand, is the trademark of the Foxen Vineyard & Winery today.
The original tasting room, known as Foxen 7200, aka The Shack, was built in the 1860’s as a blacksmith shop. It became Foxen’s tasting room back in 1987. While you can still visit The Shack today, you’ll want to spend most of your time at the new Foxen Tasting Room, a state-of-the-art facility showcasing the solar-powered winery that focuses on Bordeaux and Italian-style wines including my favorite, Pinot Noir. Located at 7600 Foxen Canyon Road in Santa Maria, the Foxen tasting room is open daily from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
In keeping with the historic buildings of the Rancho Tinaquaic, the new building has the same rustic, simple ranch-style. Surrounded by native plants, the landscaping is maintained by a minimal amount of irrigation. This helps protect one of our most precious resources we have here in California, water.

California Wine Month is just one example of the ongoing festivities in and around Santa Barbara. Maybe you should think about being one of the fortunate wine lovers who own a home or home away from home in Montecito, Hope Ranch or any of Santa Barbara’s upscale communities. If you’re considering a purchase, or even a visit as a “scouting mission,” give me a call at +1.805.886.9378 or email me at Cristal@montecito-estate.com.
On the other hand, if you’re already here and considering selling your home or vacation residence, I’ll happily add your listing to my portfolio of fine homes in the area and find your new dream home on the American Rivera. We can toast your new home while we experience Foxen Pinot Noir!
