COUNT DOWN TO 2021 IN YOUR PAJAMAS
New Year’s Eve 2020 will look a lot different than the celebration in past years. Even though the Golden State is under a Limited Stay at Home Order, airports are seeing a steady increase in travelers, coronavirus testing centers are seeing brisk business, and, due to high rates of COVID-19, hospitalizations are impacting the health care system like never before.
That’s why officials are urging Santa Barbara residents to spread cheer, not COVID-19 on New Year’s Eve 2020. Forget about hosting a big bash this year. Instead, ring in the new year by planning a fun celebration from the comfort of your couch.
Whether you opt for a full-on virtual party or prefer an intimate affair with the members of your household, here are 7 festive ideas to help you count down to 2021 in style:
- Compete in Virtual Games
Playing fun party games on New Year’s Eve is not new. In fact, for many, competing in fun games is a New Year’s Eve tradition. Just because you won’t be gathering in person doesn’t mean you can’t invite your family and friends from other households to play along together. There are dozens of interactive games available. For instance, you can easily download Houseparty. This social networking app allows up to eight people to video chat together in a virtual room. Users can easily float between rooms. By starting the party later in the evening, you’ll be able to ring in the new year together when the games are over.
- Bake Boozy Treats
It’s a tradition to count down with your friends while sipping a glass of bubbly. How about we alter this tradition just a bit by baking spiked goodies instead, like one of these alcohol-infused cupcake recipes. Bake these New Year’s desserts early enough so you’ll have plenty of time to allow them to cool, frost and enjoy before the countdown begins.
- Enjoy a “Lucky” New Year’s Eve Dinner
By skipping the pricey dinner this year, you can make a new tradition at home and cook a special meal instead. Follow these lucky New Year’s recipes and you’ll find ways to incorporate Southern American classics, like black-eyed peas or savory collard greens, traditional foods to eat on New Year’s Day for luck and money. Or prepare home-made Chinese food, or order some from your favorite local Chinese Restaurant to go or for deliver. The noodles represent long life and soup dumplings are said to bring prosperity.
- Host a Virtual Movie Night
You can host a family movie night with the kids or plan a virtual watch party with your friends. There’s a free Google Chrome extension that lets you watch Netflix remotely with long-distance loved ones by syncing your video playback. That means you can watch your favorite shows and movies at the exact same time. The feature also adds a group chat sidebar, so you can still gossip and share reactions during the show. To install the extension, visit the Netflix Party website and select the “Install Netflix Party” button. Make sure you time your movie correctly if you want to tune into the festivities when the clock strikes midnight!
- Prepare a Delicious New Year’s Day Brunch
Don’t worry that you’re staying home this year. Take the extra time you save from getting all dressed up and driving to your destination and prepare a New Year’s Day brunch to remember. Whip together a menu of tasty goodness to welcome 2021 ahead of time and just relax and enjoy the next morning. Start here, where you’ll find plenty of delicious recipes to explore. I personally recommend tried-and-true family favorites like Baked French Toast, Roasted Vegetable and Chevre Quiche or Sweet Potato and Egg Skillet. Yum!
- Create a New Cocktail (or Mocktail!)
New Year’s Eve 2020 isn’t the time for an ordinary drink, although the standard is Champagne. But since you’re staying home, why not go wild and make something new. Thankfully, Bon Appetit Magazine shared 44 celebratory New Year’s Eve 2020 cocktail and drink recipes just for us! Actually, anyone can research the topic and find lots of suggestions. Keep in mind, New Year’s Eve 2020 cocktails should make you want to move, not nap. They should inspire dancing and conversation. Think bubbles and citrus, zippy flavors and bold colors, all dressed up with fun garnishes like sweet cotton candy or rosemary sprigs. If you don’t feel like drinking alcohol this year, there are plenty of delicious mocktail recipes online to mix up instead.
- Time for Your New Year’s Resolutions
Since you don’t have to get gussied up this year, you’ll have time to write your New Year’s resolutions. Have the whole family write them down before midnight, the perfect activity for a close-knit group. You can even do it virtually. Everyone can share what they wrote, then put the paper away until next year when Everyone can see how they did.
